Karatu, Tanzania

Karatu is on the slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater In Tanzania

"The Garden of Eden"

Wildlife is abundant and protected

Forests are protected

Just outside those protected areas uncontrolled brick quarries spread

With inefficient brick ovens

Tons of trees are burned every day

Like these

To make non stabilised bricks

Used in low quality buildings

With non earthquake resistant structures

Covered up with costly cement

The future is in education

So we went to learn at the Auroville Earth Institute

Learned from the Master in Compressed Stabilised Earth Blocks CSEB technology and architecture

And brought him to Tanzania

We chose a High School to begin the project

In the village of Ayalabe, Karatu District

At the slope of the Ngorongoro Reservation Area

The Cradle of Mankind is a good place to begin

Ganako Secondary School

700 High School students and no Library. This will be the first CSEB structure in Tanzania

Preparing the presses platform

Preparing the Blockyard mixing area

The community and school will all participate in the project

Students will learn about environmentally friendly and sustainable practices. Digging the soil in a hole that will become a water collection pond for the kitchen garden.

Together we can make it happen Built by locally trained people.
